We are excited to announce a brand new nature and farm-based experience located right here in the Twin Cities! Beginning in April 2012, Country Day teacher Wendy Tremblay will be offering Saturday morning nature programs for toddler and preschool children.

Spring is here! I can’t promise you that we’ve seen the last of snow and cold, but we might as well enjoy the warm weather while it lasts. This weekend I’ll be taking some time to go on a hike with my son and look for signs of of spring. The ducks, swans, and geese have come back, trees are budding, and most animals are done hibernating. We have spotted our first grasshoppers, lady bugs, and even butterflies around Children’s Country Day School. So grab some snacks, a camera, comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy, and head out the door to explore!

You can always find nature in your own backyard, but if you’re feeling more adventurous, here are some of my favorite parks to take kids hiking:

Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge: Thousands of ducks, dozens of swans, and many hawks and eagles can be seen in this enormous refuge centered on the Minnesota River. The visitor’s center in Bloomington has great displays, and hands-on materials geared towards children. There are short trails for younger children, and longer hikes when you’ve got energy to burn.

Crosby Farm Park: Just across the Mississippi from Country Day sits one of Saint Paul’s largest, and least used natural parks. Plenty of paved trails for biking or hiking, and many dirt paths for the more adventurous. Nature highlights include beavers working on their dam, woodpeckers digging for bugs in dead trees, and plenty of mud by the lake for messy exploration. There is a picnic shelter on the West end, and plenty of logs in the woods to sit on for snack breaks. A brand new parking area has been built near 35E and Shepard, so visitors can park on either the West or East end of the park. Paved paths make bicycle access easy from either Saint Paul or Mendota Heights.

Lebanon Hills Regional Park: I have explored less than 10% of this 2,000 acre park, but what I have seen is almost enough to make me move to Eagan! There are miles of trails, numerous small ponds full of ducks and muskrats, and even designated trails for mountain bikers and horse riders.

Feel free to email me with any hiking suggestions that you’d like to share.
Now get outside, and have a wonderful weekend!

-Seth
